(Last week’s question along with the answer:) Question #164:Is Veronica's veil authentic? Answer: Saint Veronica, risking the brutality of the Roman soldiers, approached Jesus as He carried His cross. With a veil she wiped His face of sweat and blood. Afterward, she realized Jesus had given her the image of His face on her veil. (The word veronica comes from the Latin vera icon meaning true image. Saint Veronica's feast day is July 12.) As is frequently the case, we do not at this time have historical evidence to establish authenticity in the early centuries. At Saint Peters in Rome (The church previous to the current Basilica) Pope John VII (A.D.705-708) had a chapel built dedicated to Saint Veronica but there can be found no reference to the veil. The first reference to the veil found so far datesto A.D. 1011. A scribe is identified as the caretaker of the veil. The Church does not officially accept Veronica's veil as being the true face of Jesus. However, Pope Leo XIII in 1885 approved "Devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus" acceptable as a matter of personal piety as it conveys nothing contrary to Church teaching. Question #165:Is Ash Wednesday a Holy Day of obligation?
