*Father Michael's "Penny Catechism" (A fun and informative little morsel of Catholic teaching and trivia)*
Question #126: The Church teaches that every person has a guardian angel. What is this teaching based upon? What precisely does a guardian angel do?
Answer: By definition, an angel is a messenger of God. The message can be verbal, but most usually the message is non-verbal, especially in the case of our guardian angels who bring to us an enveloping of God's love and mercy for us. The Catechism states: "From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. 'Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.' Already here on earth, the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God." (CCC #336. Includes quote from Saint Basil.) Saint Matthew quotes Jesus: "See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven (Matthew 18:10).
Question#127: What does the word
Lent mean? Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on Holy Saturday when the Easter Vigil begins. But that is 46 days. Isn't Lent 40 days long?
(The answer will appear in next week's bulletin along with a new question)
